Although they kept their idyll secret, the man ended up leaving her to marry a Spanish lady of high society. The Indigenous woman could not stand it and drowned her children in the river, committing suicide later.
From that day, they say that the woman’s pain-filled lament is heard in the river where everything happened. La Llorona roams that area, dressed in white, desperately looking for those children she murdered.
